Step 9:

3rd Draft

(Content + Structure + Polish)

Expected Time: 2 Hours

Time to Polish!

Content and Structure were more important in previous steps, now it’s time to focus on editing. This is where you dig into grammar, spelling, and adding a bit of style to your writing. Before you revise, review your reader’s comments and suggestions. You may decide to use them to strengthen your essay, but that is your choice. You are beginning to move from simply sharing important details to crafting an essay. This is your story. You get to make the important decisions. Don’t let anyone else choose your words. This is your story - it should be in your own voice and in your own words, not those of your well-intended parents, teachers, or friends.

Revise Carefully

Give yourself at least an hour to write the next draft. Keep what works and get rid of what doesn’t. Make sure everything flows from beginning to end. Of course, you should use the best of your earlier drafts – keep them nearby for reference. This isn’t the time for big changes. Make every word count. Read for clarity and focus, and make small changes that can make a difference. Don’t redo the essay - you’ve already done the hard work.

Keep asking: Why am I telling this story? What do I want admissions counselors to learn about me that they wouldn’t know from the rest of my application?

Read your essay again, paying attention to content, structure AND polish. Don’t rely on someone else (or spell check) to correct your misspellings or grammar errors. This is your work, and it should reflect your best abilities as a writer.

Review feedback from Kris and polish your essay. Save the updated draft in your Essay Folder. Check "Done" in Counselmore assignments.
